CVSA Rocks Neptune

The CVSA was heard from on the weekend of August 7-8 at the
Neptune Soccer Classic at the Hampton Roads Soccer Complex in Virginia Beach. The tournament had a number of different classifications with the following CVSA participants:

Men's
  • Premier
  • Competitive: BlackWatch United, BlackWatch FC, Lions Express
  • Recreational: Atlas
  • 30+: Edo's Squid
  • 40+: Lions Masters
Women's

Coed
  • Premier
  • Competitive
  • Recreational: Internationals

The highlight of the CVSA's contingent was the literal sweep of the Men's Competitive by clubmates BlackWatch United and BlackWatch FC. Brian Bearekman of BlackWatch supplied the following results:
BlackWatch United
Blackwatch United 9, Norfolk Saints 1
Blackwatch United 6, Louisa Samba 3
Blackwatch United 3, West Indies United 0
Semifinal: Blackwatch United 3, Neurona 1
Final: Blackwatch United 2, Blackwatch FC 2 (3:1 PK)
BlackWatch FC
Blackwatch FC 5, Virginia Beach Int'l 0
Blackwatch FC 2, Neurona 0
Blackwatch FC 4, Herndon United 3
Semifinal: Blackwatch FC 3, USS Saipan 1
Final: Blackwatch FC 2, Blackwatch United 2 (1:3 PK)

Also in the Men's Competitive Division was Lions Express. The Lions Express had a solid start to 2004, making it to the CVSA Cup Final, and placing 5th in the 2003-'04 MDCVSA State Cup - both firsts for this team. Reflecting on his team's recent success, captain Chris Bird had this to add about Lions Express's performance at Neptune:
    "Lions went 1-1-1."
Thanks, Chris! And keep up the good work!

Atlas competed in the Men's Recreational Division. Team Manager Brian Bartlett reports that Atlas made it to championship game, falling to FCS Corinthians of the Commonwealth Soccer League 0:2 - "We played well in the first 3 games (just got a little unlucky in the first one.) We lost one player to a broken rib in game 2 and another to a family emergency just before the finals, which left us with 3 subs for the finals and everyone was exhausted. We also had two guest players from Bandito's." Atlas's ledger is as follows:
    Atlas
Atlas 0 - Newcastle (Triangle Adult Soccer League - Cary NC) 1
Atlas 3 - FC Corinthians (Commonwealth Soccer League) 1
Atlas wins Group A based on GD
Semifinal: Atlas 4 - Magnet Jr. (Capital Soccer League) 0
    Final: Atlas 0 - FC Corinthians 2

In the 40+ Division, age was served as Lions Masters won the division after many close calls over the past few years. CVSA Field Maintenance Coordinator Cary Wright took some time off from his duties at Bryan Park to file the following [by the author's request, grammatical errors have remained intact]:
"Lions Masters won the over 40 division with a 3-1 record. we beat VA beach mariners in the final 3-0 after knocking at the door for 5 years (2nd place 3-4 times) we finally broke thru and won. Brad Winchell received MVP honors for the championship game, scoring two goals in the first half."

In the Coed Division, the Internationals represented the CVSA. Longtime CVSA member (and one of the keepers of the Available Players List!) Jay Shurley had some regrets, but showed well:
"Internationals finished second in our division so we were not eligible for the playoffs. In looking back and talking with other players it seems I made the mistake of letting a guest player make our lineup which was a 3-5-2. It cost us dearly in our first game as we lost 3-1 to the eventual tournament champion. We were winning the second game 2 nil until this same player decided he didnt want to play defense any more and his subsequent throw-in to an opposing teams player cost us a goal which was quickly followed by their second goal from the confusion of our defense. Final was a tie 2-2. At half time of our last game which we were tied 1-1, I decided to change our configuration to a more traditional 4-4-2, and we won 5-1. So we went 1-1-1 for the tournament. It seemed clear to all of us had we had the luck of playing our games in reverse order we may have had a different outcome for the weekend. I had a hodge podge team made up of a player from the Pink Panthers, 1 from the Rogues, 1 from the Charlottesville league, 1 from the SEVWSA league at the beach, some guest players from Columbia MD, and some of my Summer players."
Currently, we're still waiting a report from Edo's Squid
