Internationals Coed Take on the Coed and 30+ Men in Wilmington, NC![]() The Internationals Coed team of CVSA, with 4 guest players from Chesterfield FC Coed, traveled to Wilmington, NC and competed on Feb. 11-12th in the Seaside Adult Soccer Classic, which was hosted by the Cape Fear Soccer Association. During the tournament the Internationals were placed in a division with two 30+ mens teams, since coed turnout for the tournament was low. The first match for Internationals Coed was with a men's team that made it known that a team full of "GIRLS" was no match for them. Even though most of the play was dominated by the men's team, the Internationals were able to keep them from scoring. Soon, frustration and despair set in and the trash talking along with the fouling increased. Late in the game it was still a 0-0 tie. The defining moment came when a second and game-winning goal was scored by River Pugsley, an Internationals' FEMALE player. The final was 2-1. Internationals Coed suffered defeat to Bier FC of Northern VA in the second match. Bier FC is the current state champion from the USASA National tournament. They are a two-time Semifinalist in the USASA National Over-30 Cup tournament and recently finished as a Quarterfinalist in the 2004-2005 tournament. Internationals Coed played in the Final for the Coed title on Sunday. During the first half of the game Internationals Coed were unable to capitalize on many opportunities. The opponents made the most of three chances early on and began the second half leading 3-0. Realizing a need for adjustments, the Internationals decided to make some changes on the field for the start of the second half. Several minutes into the half Internationals Coed hit pay dirt with 2 quick goals. It suddenly seemed a bit more possible, but then midway through the half the other team scored again. In the last 10 minutes or so of regulation time, Internationals Coed kept constant pressure on the opponent's goalkeeper. The pressure resulted in a goalkeeper error, a blatant foul by the keeper was committed in the box and a goal was scored off the ensuing penalty kick. The comeback seemed possible again. The ref's clock beeped, but there was significant injury time left. As time expired Internationals Coed found the back of the net to bring the match even at 4-4. The tournament rules called for 2 halves of overtime of 10 minutes each. Drawing off the momentum generated at the end of regulation, Internationals Coed scored a goal in the first couple of minutes. They then held off all attacks throughout the remaining minutes of OT to take home the Championship with a 5-4 victory. Contributing to the attack were James "JR" Fox, Chad Porter, and Jacob Servinsky among others. As Jay Shurley stated, "It was one whale of a comeback!"
