WANT TO BE A REFEREE?

WE WANT YOU!

Old Dominion Soccer Referee Service (ODSRS), CVSA's preferred supplier of officials is looking for your assistance. As the league grows larger each season (45 to 101 teams in the past 4 years), so does the need for qualified officials to call the matches. While we feel we have kept up with the league growth to date, our estimates show that without constant efforts to grow the pool of adult officials, we will soon exceed the number of qualified officials and may consider limiting teams and matches in coming seasons. In an ongoing effort to further improve the number and quality of officials provided, ODSRS is canvassing all league players to encourage those interested to become certified as a USSF Soccer Referee in addition to playing in the CVSA.

There are already several CVSA players that are also officials and it is working out well for both parties. Typically, player referees will work a match (or two) on selected Sundays in addition to playing. You can play your matches and make some extra money ($35-$55 per match), all without leaving the pitch. On youth tournament weekends, when the CVSA is typically idle (at least partially) a referee generally nets up to $200. For those working 5+ assignments each year, the league will also pick up the annual referee certification cost of $45.

Officiating is not difficult, as new officials are assigned lines until they feel comfortable and wish to consider working a center. Certification involves attending a 16 hour class over a single weekend which reviews the laws and the game. Once certified, referees submit availability and accept matches only when they are available. The assignor works with these officials to ensure playing and officiating are well coordinated.
